How To: Enable the Built-in Screen Recorder on Android 10

How To: Enable the Built-in Screen Recorder on Android 10
Downloading third-party screen recording apps can be dangerous. The primary function of these apps is being able to record everything on one's display, so it's easy to see how a malicious developer could exploit this for their own gain. That's why the addition of Android 10's built-in screen recording is so impactful. With Android Q, you can take advantage of Android's built-in screen recorder any time you wish to share your screen. This feature will meet the needs of most of you, with only the basics that will let you record, pause recordings, stop and save, and, of course, share. There aren't any special settings or confusing options, making it a pretty straightforward tool once you know how to unlock it.By default, this new feature is hidden from users. But with a few steps, you can take advantage of this feature and never have to download another screen recording app again.

Step 1: Enable Developer OptionsBy default, the screen recorder is disabled, so you'll have to manually enable it. Before that, however, you first need to unhide the "Developer options" menu.Open the Settings app, select "About phone," then tap on the "Build number" at the bottom at least 7 times in a row. You'll be prompted to enter in your lock screen password, PIN, or gesture. After you do, you'll return to the previous page, and it will say "You are now a developer!" Now, return to the "System" settings, choose "Advanced" to reveal more options, and you will now see "Developer options."

Step 2: Enable the Screen RecorderInside your "Developer options" menu, select "Feature flags" in the Debugging section. Next, find the "settings_screenrecord_long_press" flag and toggle it on.

Step 3: Record Your ScreenOnce enabled, you will now be able to use the new built-in screen recorder. Long-press the power button to access the power menu, then long-press the screenshot button until you see a menu pop-up with the button "Start Recording." Tap it, and a new pop-up will appear warning that this program will capture everything on your display. Choose "Start now."A notification will appear titled "Screen Recording" with stop, pause, and cancel options available. Each does as their name implies, allowing you to stop the recording, pause it, or end it without saving it. The notification can be accessed at any time by pulling the tray down from the top. After you hit "Stop," the video will be saved to your default gallery in a folder called "Captures." In the notification that states it was saved, you also have the option to "Share" or "Delete" the video. If you try to take a screenshot during a recording, it seems to break the screen recording, so keep that in mind. News: All the Latest Leaks & Rumors on the Galaxy S10
Update: The new Galaxy phones are now official! Check out all the details on the Galaxy S10 and S10+ or the Galaxy S10e.The Galaxy S9 didn't even hit shelves before fans were already musing about its followup. It's no secret Samsung's newest device, as impressive as it is, is little more than an upgrade to last year's S8. As a result, excitement has begun brewing for what Samsung has in store as it marks the Galaxy's 10th anniversary.Samsung's 2019 flagship will undoubtedly make a huge splash when it finally makes its debut, and will all but certainly be a considerable upgrade over the stopgap that is the S9. With its unveiling just around the corner, the trickle of leaks and rumors have given way to a flood of information that's served to to feed our excitement. So, without further ado, here's what we know so far about the S9's successor.
Announcement & ReleaseAs a flagship that celebrates the Galaxy line's 10th anniversary, Samsung will hold an exclusive event like it did for the S8. And that day may finally be upon us, as it's widely expected that the Galaxy S10 line of flagship phones will be formally announced during Samsung's UNPACKED event being held in San Francisco on February 20, 2019 at 2:00 EST.
Up to 4 Different ModelsIf recent leaks are to be believed, Samsung may follow in Apple's footsteps and release three distinct S10 models of varying specs and price points. According to ETNews out of Korea, Samsung is busy developing three variants of its secret Beyond flagship — aptly named "Beyond 0," "Beyond 1," and "Beyond 2."Taking a page from its S6 and S7 playbooks, Beyond 0 is slated to be the most affordable of the three variants, and will feature a flat 5.8" display panel as opposed to the curved 5.8" and 6.2" displays found on the Beyond 1 and 2. Given Samsung's history with flagship variants, it's safe to assume that unlike the upcoming entry-level iPhone XR, the S10/Beyond 0 variant will sport an OLED display. And there's more, as Ice Universe reports that Samsung is planning on building another S10 variant with 5G connectivity, in anticipation of the newest cellular technology, and dubbed this model "Beyond X". This would place Samsung's next flagship in a new category for speed. SamMobile goes on further, and reports that Samsung and Verizon may be working together to finally introduce 5G to the masses starting with the S10.As exciting as the potential of a 5G-capable S10 variant is, news has recently surfaced which casts doubt on whether it'll be released. The folks over at TechieRide have uncovered Russian documents which appear to certify Samsung's upcoming flagships. There's bad news, however, as it lists only three devices — SM-G970F, SM-G973F, and SM-G975F — for formal certification. Interestingly, SamMobile reported the same three models receiving certification in China back in OctoberTherefore, it's safe to assume that the missing S10 variant is likely to be the 5G-capable Beyond X, due to it's highly advanced features that just aren't quite ready for the mass market. After all, 5G has yet to be formally implemented in any significant capacity, so it doesn't make sense to release a 5G device when the service itself is still in its infancy stage.

Potential Triple Camera SystemHuawei's P20 Pro has turned the arms race for more advanced cameras up a notch with the introduction of a third rear camera sensor, and Samsung will likely follow suit when it rolls out its Galaxy flagships next year. According to The Investor, KB Securities analyst Kim Dong-won predicts that the Galaxy S10 will sport three rear-facing cameras. Three-camera setup as found on the P20 Pro. Image by Roland Quandt/Twitter If this rumor proves to be true, however, only the priciest S10 variant will employ the advanced triple-camera system. According to Korean site The Bell, the triple-camera setup will only be available to the Galaxy S10+, and will consist of a super wide-angle 16 MP camera, a 13 MP telephoto lens, and a primary 12 MP camera. The entry-level S10 and standard S10 will both be equipped with dual-cameras.Interestingly, The Bell — along with the Wall Street Journal — goes on further and claims that the 5G-capable model of the S10 will sport a rear shooter made up of four camera modules to set it completely apart from the rest of the lineup. Unfortunately, this variant will only be available in limited quantities according to the site, largely due to lack of widespread 5G adoption at the outset.Samsung's move makes sense as the industry is clearly trending in that direction. As a reference, we can take a look at the P20 Pro's rear camera setup, which is comprised of a 40 MP main and 8 MP supporting sensor, along with a 20 MP monochrome sensor for enhanced sharpness and contrast. Tap on the link below for a more detailed breakdown.Full Rundown: Here's How the P20 Pro's Advanced Triple Camera System Works
3D Facial RecognitionAccording to Korean news source The Bell, an Israeli startup is building 3D camera technology for the S10. Mantis Vision is reportedly working with a company called Namuga to develop the camera, which is expected to be utilized for both face recognition and augmented reality. This would make sense — one of Apple's biggest advantages right now is in its TrueDepth 3D camera technology, which uses 30,000 IR beams to read and analyze your face. Its Animoji is objectively superior to the S9's AR Emoji, which critics seem to find stuttery and, on occasion, creepy.Don't Miss: How to Make an AR Emoji With the Galaxy S9

In-Display Fingerprint Sensor Finally ArrivingThe Galaxy S10 may finally bring the much sought after screen-embedded fingerprint sensor to the mainstream. According to ETNews from Korea, Samsung has more or less confirmed the feature's presence in its 2019 flagships. The reports goes on to claim that Qualcomm may be tasked with supplying the sensors for use on the S10.In addition, the leak also suggests that Samsung will utilize ultrasonic fingerprint sensors, which are able to accurately read fingerprints by transmitting ultrasonic pulses against the finger to map out all the nooks and crannies unique to each fingerprint. This method is significantly more accurate than optical sensors that rely on visual mapping which limit its ability to reproduce fingerprints in full 3D.And while earlier rumors suggested that the feature will only be available on the higher-end S10 variants with curved displays, a recent report by SamMobile reveals that all three S10 models will come standard with in-display fingerprint sensors. While this earlier leak suggested that the upper-tier S10 variants with curved OLED displays will utilize the more advanced (and expensive) ultrasonic sensors, with the flat-screened entry model S10 featuring the less accurate optical fingerprint sensor to keep production costs down, ETNews suggests otherwise. The Korean site claims that all three S10 models will in fact feature the more accurate ultrasonic sensors. To add further meat to this rumor, Ice Universe has recently reported that Samsung just showed off a crop of new technologies in a private event — chief among them being Fingerprint on Display, or FoD, for short. Forbes follows up and speculates that the S10 will most likely have ultrasonic sensors. A sneak peak at the features the S10 will bring to the table. Image by Ice Universe/Twitter
Iris Sensor Will Be DitchedWith the high likelihood of both an advanced in-display ultrasonic fingerprint scanner and facial recognition technology arriving with the Galaxy S10, it only makes sense for Samsung to abandon the iris scanner first introduced on the Note 7, and this may very well be the case. According to Korean site The Bell, Samsung will stop implementing iris scanning technology on future flagships, starting with the S10.The site reports that Samsung has conspicuously not made any attempts to order hardware modules related to iris scanning from any vendors it has relied on in the past. Interestingly, famed Samsung Leaker Ice Universe has recently backed up this claim, tweeting that the new fingerprint sensors "will replace" the iris scanner.

Notch-Less Display All but ConfirmedThe notch has come to dominate smartphone design beginning with the iPhone X, and has since been copied by numerous phones like the OnePlus 6. Samsung may aim to buck this trend, however, as they're busy perfecting a tech that may do away with the need for a notch. As BGR reports, Samsung has unveiled a new OLED panel that uses "Sound on display" technology to turn the screen into a speaker.Samsung may implement this novel feature into the upcoming Galaxy S10 to avoid the notched display entirely for a more streamlined, aesthetically pleasing design. To further support this claim. ETNews from Korea reports that Samsung and LG both plan to launch devices featuring displays that double as speakers in the first half of 2019 — lining up perfectly with S-series release dates.A new report goes on to further solidify this claim. According to Ice Universe, Samsung recently showcased tech they call "Sound on Display" to do away with the unsightly notch that's come to plague the smartphone industry. Dubbed SoD for short, if it's included in the S10, the new flagship will completely do away with traditional speakers and use the display itself to transmit sound.Tantalizingly, new leaks have emerged that cements Samsung's notch-less approach for its upcoming flagships, this time centering around how it handles the front camera. Among the latest and most notable of these rumors comes by way of Evan Blass, who tweeted an image which he claims to have sourced from a reputable case maker. As seen below, the image pretty much speaks for itself. Image by Evan Blass/Twitter

A Truly Bezel-Less DesignThanks to a screen-embedded fingerprint sensor and ear speaker, along with small ports for the front camera sensors, Samsung may be the closest yet in achieving an almost all-screen design. Surprisingly, we don't need to look very far if we want to get a glimpse of how the S10 will look, as Samsung has recently unveiled a smartphone with similar characteristics. The Samsung Galaxy A8s features the new Infinity-O display, which uses a small circular cutout for the front camera. Not only does this provide and excellent workaround to steer clear from having to implement a notch, it also paves the way for even thinner bezels, as seen below. Image via Samsung To further add teeth to this claim, Ice Universe has uncovered a benchmark for Samsung Browser 9.0, which was performed on a device listed as SM-405F. In the past, Samsung has used similarly coded labels to conceal upcoming Galaxy devices during their testing phase. As such, SM-405F could very well be the upcoming S10 being put through its paces. If that weren't interesting enough, Ice Universe points us towards the device's "Screen size," which is 412 x 869 pixels, or an aspect ratio of 19:9. So, if the device in question is indeed the Galaxy S10, this means the upcoming flagships will utilize even more screen space as compared to the standard 18.5:9 aspect ratio currently found on the S9 and S9+, which equates to even thinner bezels than before. Image by Ice Universe/Twitter Ice Universe has recently doused gasoline on this fiery rumor, and has confirmed that Samsung has been working on UPS — or Under Panel Sensors — within its display assemblies to completely do away with unsightly notches for a truly bezel-less design. To add another piece to the puzzle, AllAboutSamsung reports that the up coming flagships will have a screen-to-body ratio of 93.4%.And Ice Universe's speculations regarding the S10's bezel-less design doesn't end there, as he's uncovered a major clue within Android Pie (Samsung Experience 10) itself. In it he's discovered a demo image for the new Night Theme feature showing a device with completely uniform borders along the display, which hints at a device that won't utilize any notches for a symmetrical, almost bezel-less screen. The implications are truly enormous, as the S10 could be the first handset to feature "invisible" sensors that will "sense through" the superimposed display, and leave an ample amount of room for designers and engineers to bring a notch-less smartphone to fruition.

Incredibly High ResolutionSamsung's Galaxy devices have always represented the cutting edge in screen technology, and their tenth anniversary flagship may set this bar at an all time high if a rumor proves to be true. According to famed leaker Ice Universe, the S10 will feature an OLED display with an astounding resolution of more than 600 pixels per inch (ppi) — 13% more dense than the S9's 529 ppi.
A Rival to 3D TouchIf a recent leak turns out to be true, Android will finally have an answer to the iPhone's venerable 3D Touch technology that replicated physical button interaction by way of haptic feedback. Unlike 3D Touch, however, Ice Universe will employ the novel HoD — short for Haptics on Display — technology which use the S10's display itself to transmit haptic feedback, doing away with the traditional haptic motor.

S10+ to Feature Dual Front-Facing CamerasIf recent leaks turn out to be true, the highest-tier S10 variant may utilize dual cameras for its front-facing shooter, similar to what's found on the Samsung Galaxy A8. According to The Bell, the 6.2" S10+ will feature a front-facing camera setup consisting of a primary camera sensor that's complimented by a secondary telephoto sensor to give it the ability to take selfies in unprecedented detail and clarity. The dual-camera setup will also enable the S10+ to take portrait shots featuring a blurred background, giving selfies that highly sought-after "Bokeh" effect that's growing in popularity. Currently, there are no specifics regarding the front-facing cameras' resolution, but we can expect it to be more advanced than the dual 16 MP and 8 MP setup found on the Galaxy A8. Dual camera setup on the Galaxy A8. Image by C4ETech/YouTube

Front Camera Will Have Its Own Gestures & AnimationAs is evident on the Galaxy A8s, Samsung has added some nifty features into the device's front camera to enhance user-friendliness. There's an animated ring that glows when changing camera modes, and the front camera can be quickly accessed from the lock screen simply by swiping down on the sensor itself.According to GSMArena, the upcoming S10 flagships will likely utilize the same features for their front shooters, and may even come with extra functionality such as custom animations for facial recognition. Image by TechDroider/YouTube
Snapdragon 855 Under the HoodWinFuture's Roland Quandt claims Qualcomm is working on the Snapdragon 855, which he believes will be 7nm, 3nm smaller than the current 845 SoC. If that proves to be the case, it's safe to assume this SoC will come standard with the US Variant, as more powerful Exynos-based Galaxy flagships have traditionally been reserved for markets outside of the United States. While we're on the topic, rumor has it Samsung is developing an AI-powered chip similar to the Huawei Mate 10 Pro's NPU (neural network processing unit). The hope here would be to see a more intelligent chipset that uses machine learning to allow the S10 to perform much faster and smarter than the S9.

More Powerful MemoryIf a new leak is to be believed, the S10 will mark a significant upgrade over the S9's RAM and flash storage capabilities. According to noted leaker Ice Universe, Samsung's upcoming flagship will come equipped with beefed up LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.0 storage, giving it a boost in performance to further compete with whatever Apple has to offer. Image by Ice Universe/Twitter To put it into perspective, the Galaxy S9's LPDDR4 and UFS 2.1 flash storage and are among the fastest memory chips currently out, giving the iPhone X a run for its money in terms of speed tests. The S10's upgraded memory will make it a whole lot snappier, thanks to more powerful memory modules that effectively double its bandwidth.Along with the increase in speed, the flagship's upgraded memory is set to consume less power and run more efficiently even at higher temperatures, which will result in noticeable improvements in terms of streaming media and gaming experience, to name a few.Without a doubt, the Galaxy S10 is set to make its mark on the mobile industry when it finally touches down in 2019. But before it does, we're left to speculate about it using what little information we have. Fortunately, more details will inevitably bubble to the surface as its arrival draws near, so check back regularly.
S10 Vatiant with 12 GB of RAM and 1 TB of Storage RumoredAs incredible as it sounds, there is a chance that Samsung may break new ground with the release of the Galaxy S10 by offering a variant that'll significantly raise the bar in terms of RAM and internal storage. And if this rumor comes to pass, it'll undoubtedly leave major OEMs like Google and Apple scrambling to catch up in the never ending race to ever higher RAM and internal storage capacity.GizChina reports that, according to Chinese market analysis and research firm GF Securities, one of the Galaxy S10 variants will come with a whopping 12GB of RAM and 1TB of internal storage, though it doesn't get into specifics as to which model will have this impressive configuration. Based on current trends, however, if this rumor turns out to be true, either the S10+ or the 5G-capable S10 will off this option due to their top-tier status.

Ceramic ProtectionIf SamMobile's hunch turns out to be true, the S10 will be the first Galaxy flagship to utilize ceramic rear panels, or at least one of its variants will be. The site reports that the 5G-capable model of the S10 will come equipped with this highly durable material and be finished in either black or white.Of course, employing a ceramic rear panel on a premium handset is nothing new, as evidenced by flagships like the Essential PH-1. If a world-famous brand like Samsung formally adopts the feature, however, this design element will make its way to mainstream and become a more viable alternative to glass-based rear panels. Image by GregglesTV/YouTube
3.5 mm Headphone Jack May Finally Be DitchedStarting with Apple, companies like HTC have left out the traditional headphone jack from their flagships, much to the chagrin of audiophiles. Only LG and Samsung have so far resisted the trend, but if a new rumor turns out to be true, it seems that the latter may also finally cave in. According to SamMobile, Samsung has produced a prototype for the upcoming S10 with no headphone jack. While the existence of a jack-less prototype indicates the company is thoroughly looking into this matter to see what the best course of action is, we shouldn't immediately jump to conclusions, as there is no firm evidence that Samsung will in fact ditch the feature. What's clear, however, is that the option is on the table, so we'll be sure to update you with any news regarding this topic if anything more concrete emerges.
Ever Larger BatteriesIf a new leak proves true, the largest Galaxy S10 variant will push the boundaries of battery capacity which will surely have the competition playing catch-up. According to WinFuture, the S10+ will come standard with an impressive 4,100 mAh battery, beating out the iPhone XS Max's 3174 mAh battery by a fair margin. The site also reports that the S10E and S10 will have 3100 and 3400 mAh batteries, respectively.Of course, Samsung is by no means the first to employ such a large battery for its flagship phones, as other handsets like the Huawei Mate 20 which features an incredible 4,200 mAh battery are coming out well in advance of the S10.

Reverse Wireless Charging LikelyWireless charging is a pretty well established feature among flagship devices, but if new rumors are to be believed, the upcoming Galaxy S10 will take this feature up a notch to further set it apart from the rest of the crowd. WinFuture has posted an image of wireless earbuds made for the Galaxy S10+. That's not the interesting part however, as the image seems to highlight the flagships' reverse-wireless charging functionality. Image by GregglesTV/YouTube
Pricing: Start Saving NowAs Samsung's flagship, you can expect the upcoming S10 line to put a sizable dent in your wallet. While we don't have anything concrete with regards to pricing, we now have reasonable estimates thanks to some noteworthy leaks. As to be expected, prices for the flagship will vary between variants, with the entry level S10 being the cheapest and the S10+ being the most expensive.Gizmodo reports that the pricing for the Galaxy S10 will start out at around £670 ($840) for the S10E, £800 ($1,007) and £1,000 ($1,260) for the 128 and 512 GB variant, respectively, for the mid-level S10. The S10+ will be the priciest model of all, and will cost you about £900 ($1,133) for the 128 GB model, £1,100 ($1,385) for 512 GB, and a whopping £1,400 ($1,762) for the 1 TB variant of the S10+.WinFuture's estimates for Samsung's flagship line is also right around Gizmodo's reported price range. According to the site, the S10E will retail around €749 ($849), while the S10 will go between €899 ($1,019) and €1149 ($1,300) for the 128 and 512 GB versions, respectively. The S10+ will cost between €999 ($1,130), €1249 ($1415), and €1499 ($1699) for the 128 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB variants, again respectively. The dollar numbers we listed here are direct conversions and don't account for higher European import tariffs, so they may be a good 10% lower in the US.Don't Miss: Everything You Need to Know About the Samsung Galaxy S9Follow Gadget Hacks on Pinterest, Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

Nova Launcher 101: How to Add Any Widget to Android Oreo's Expanded Dock

Nova Launcher 101: How to Add Any Widget to Android Oreo's Expanded Dock
Nova Launcher continues to push the boundary of features available to home screen launchers. While most users are waiting for their OEMs to send out the Android 8.0 update, Nova provides access to many of Android Oreo's features to the 99.8% of devices currently using an older version. However, Nova tries not only to add new features but to improve their design.A few weeks back, TelsaCoil Software released an update that added the search widget to the dock as found on the Pixel 2 lineup. Unlike the stock launcher with the Pixel 2 and 2 XL, Nova made the search widget optional so you could stick with the older dock design if you wanted. But now, they've improved on this feature by increasing the available widgets that can be placed in this position, so any 4 x 1 widget can be added to the expanded dock for easy access.Don't Miss: How to Get Android Oreo's Adaptive Icons Using Nova Launcher

Step 1: Download the Latest Version of Nova LauncherHead over to the Play Store and install Nova Launcher. You will need the latest version (5.5.1) in order to use the feature.Install Nova Launcher for free from the Play Store

Step 2: Enable the Search Widget in the DockOnce installed, open up Nova Launcher and long-press any empty space on the home screen. From there, choose "Settings," then select "Dock" and choose the "Searchbar in dock" option. At this point, Nova will present you with two choices for the placement of the search bar.If you wish to replicate the look of the Pixel 2 and 2 XL, choose "Below icons." However, if you want your new widget above the current icons found in the dock, choose "Above icons." Once selected, return to the home screen to see the newly expanded dock with the search widget.

Step 3: Customize the WidgetBy default, a Google search widget will now be placed in the newly-expanded dock, but you can use any widget of your choosing. So long-press the search widget to bring up a sub-menu, then select the "Replace" option.Nova will present you with a list of all available 4 x 1 widgets from apps installed on your device. Select the widget you wish to use and Nova will replace the search widget with your new choice. Nova continues to lead the charge with its home screen launcher by adding the latest features of Android. Not only did they add the customize widgets into the docks, but they updated the sub-menu to match the look found in Android 8.1 Oreo and added Adaptive icons to the stable version of Nova (these features were previously found in the beta version). Nova's quick ability to not only add new features but include additional functionality is one of the main reasons it made the top spot on our home screen launcher comparison. How To: Use Screen Pinning in Android 9.0 Pie to Lock Apps in the Foreground

How To: Use Screen Pinning in Android 9.0 Pie to Lock Apps in the Foreground
Screen pinning is a fairly unknown feature despite the fact that it's been around since 2014. It's a helpful security tool that limits access to your device to only one app — perfect for those times when someone asks to borrow your phone. While previous versions kept this feature exactly the same, Android 9.0 Pie's new multitasking UI changes the way it works.Android Pie introduced gesture navigation. With this change, Google made adjustments to the UI, including a major revision to the recent apps screen. Because of this, Google knew that functions involving the recent apps screen would need to revised, including screen pinning. So for those of you who even know about the feature, here's how screen pinning works in Android 9.0.Don't Miss: All the Coolest New Features & Changes in Android 9.0 Pie

Step 1: Turn on Screen PinningTo enable screen pinning on Android Pie, start by heading to the main settings menu and selecting "Security & location." Scroll to the bottom and tap "Advanced" to reveal more options. The very last option (which is one reason many people miss it) is "Screen pinning." Choose this option and select the toggle to enable the feature. Once enabled, you'll notice a second toggle which previously wasn't there. This option controls where users can go once they attempt to unpin the app in the foreground. If you leave this option disabled, the person who borrowed your phone will be able to open other apps once they unpin the screen. If you enable this option, on the other hand, unpinning sends them to the lock screen. The problem is that unpinning is as simple as holding two buttons, which Android informs you how to do when you enable screen pinning. Therefore, to protect your data, make sure this toggle is enabled.

Step 2: Pin Your ScreenWith screen pinning enabled, enter the multitasking menu using the recent apps button or the new swipe-up gesture. For the latter, swipe up from the home button. Swipe left to see all the apps you've previously opened on your device.Don't Miss: How to Enable the iPhone X-Like Home Button Swipe Gesture in Android 9.0 Pie Once you locate the app you wish to pin, tap the icon on the top of the app (in the center). A submenu will appear with the option "Pin." Select this option, and when done correctly, a pop-up will emerge along the bottom informing you the screen is pinned. Once pinned, you can safely hand your phone over to coworkers, friends, or family members without having to worry about them digging around where they shouldn't be. Especially for nosey individuals, you can pin them to the dialer app so that all they can do is make that phone call they asked to make.
Step 3: Unpin the ScreenWith the screen pinned, you are limited to the confines of the app in the foreground. To unpin the app, hold the back and home buttons. This will unpin the screen and return you the lock screen. However, if you disabled the second option in Step 1, you will remain in the phone with ability to navigate freely.Screen pinning is helpful in situations where someone asks to borrow your phone to make a call or shoot a text. No longer do you need to worry about a nosey individuals browsing throughout your phone when you lend it out. Just remember, they can navigate within the app you pinned, so double check what information they can access while in it.Don't Miss: 33 Cool Little Android Features You Might Not Know About Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Improve Battery Life on Your iPhone Running iOS 12

How To: Improve Battery Life on Your iPhone Running iOS 12
Performance and stability improvements, as well as new features, are just some reasons to install iOS 12, but new changes mean new battery health challenges. It can be difficult to boost battery life while taking advantage of everything this update has to offer. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to avoid unnecessary battery drain when using iOS 12 on your iPhone. While many of the following tips involve being smart with certain settings and features you have control over, it's not all on your shoulders; Apple knows you worry about your iPhone's battery life throughout the day, and they have included new solutions in their latest iOS update to help maximum time between charges. All those tips and more are included in our list below.Don't Miss: 100+ Cool New iOS 12 Features You Didn't Know About

1. Listen to Your iPhone's AdviceIn the "Battery" section of the Settings, you'll find Insights & Suggestions. This area will provide tips on how to cut down on battery usage, tailored to your specific needs. For example, if iOS detects your iPhone is using high brightness, it might suggest you dim your display to save on battery power. It's a helpful feature that feels more personal than generic battery-saving advice.More Info: Using iOS 12's New Insights & Suggestions for Improved Battery Life

2. Keep Track of Your Usage with New ChartsIOS 12 introduces new tools to keep your battery usage in check. Fresh this year are charts that detail both your battery usage as well as your battery activity over 24-hour and 10-day periods of time. Here, you can get a sense for how often you use your iPhone and how that impacts your overall battery life over time. Tap anywhere on either chart to get a more detailed view of your battery data. For example, the 24-hour battery level chart will show you increments of 15 minutes in any given area you tap, while the 10-day battery usage chart will show you one day's data at a time.More Info: How to Make Use of iOS 12's New Battery Charts for iPhone

3. View Battery Usage by AppIf the new charts aren't specific enough for your taste, try Battery Usage by App at the bottom of the "Battery" page. Here, iOS 12 lists all of your used apps, accompanied by both time and battery percentage used by each over either 24-hour or 10-day period. These lists are sorted by usage, so you quickly see which of your apps is using the most of your battery. Perhaps it will encourage you to use high-powered apps less, or, if rarely-used apps make the list, dive into their settings and reduce their use.More Info: Everything You Need to Know About iOS 12's New Battery Stats

4. Use Dark Mode in Apps When PossibleSome third-party apps have a dark theme built in since iOS doesn't have one itself. This tip is mainly for iPhones with an OLED screen, such as the iPhone X. These types of screens will display nothing in place of black colors, so if an app is using black as its background, your display is using a lot less juice.YouTube has a dark mode, while others like Instagram only have one if you're jailbroken. For apps that don't have a built-in dark mode, such as iOS Settings, you can use Apple's "Smart Invert" feature to swap whites for blacks.More Info: How to Unlock the New 'Dark Mode' in iOS 11 & Higher
5. Use Audio Only for Group FaceTime Calls (Coming Later)Group FaceTime lets you chat with up to 31 other people at once. While Apple has worked out a great system for keeping 32 faces on-screen at the same time, you don't need to show yours to participate. IOS 12 lets you join a group call with only your voice, even if other users on the call are using video. That way, your camera can stay off, and you can save a little battery while you talk.More Info: How to Use FaceTime's Group Chat on Your iPhone
6. Disable Dynamic WallpapersAs cool as some of Apple's "Dynamic Wallpapers" are in iOS, they can really eat up some battery. Unlike the 3D Touch wallpapers, these ones animate all the time in the background, so it's better to avoid using them. You can change the background for your lock screen or home screen from "Wallpapers" in Settings.

7. Disable Unnecessary NotificationsOne of iOS 12's most anticipated features is the fine-tuned notification system. That being said, unnecessary notifications only serve to annoy you and to use up your iPhone's precious battery. If you find yourself receiving notifications you don't want or need, pop the notification with 3D Touch. Then, tap the ellipsis (•••) on the window, select "Turn Off..." then "Turn Off All Notifications."More Info: How to Quickly Change Notification Settings for Any App in iOS 12 Images by Justin Meyers/Gadget Hacks Alternatively, take a dive into your Settings app, tap "Notifications," then select the app in question. Make sure "Allow Notifications" is disabled to block the app from sending you further alerts.

8. Turn Off Siri SuggestionsSiri Suggestions have only gotten more useful under iOS 12. That being said, the feature can still use more battery than its worth. If you think the extra battery life is worth losing Suggestions over, you can disable them in Search, Look Up, or on the Lock Screen, as well as for individual apps. Just head to "Siri & Search" in Settings, and decide for yourself what needs to be enabled as well as what doesn't.
9. Avoid Using Animoji & Memoji (iPhone X Only)While iOS 12's Memojis are a fun take on Animoji introduced with the iPhone X, these animated avatars don't come without cost — it takes extra battery power to render and map either the emojis or personalized Memoji onto your face, especially with the new tongue and wink detection shipping with iOS 12. If you want to make your iPhone's battery last, avoid using Animoji to communicate on-the-go.Don't Miss How to Create Personal Memoji on the iPhone X

10. Disable Background App RefreshBackground app refresh is a great tool to keep your apps up to date and active while you focus on other things. However, background activity is a battery-drainer. While useful, battery-conscious users will want this feature disabled. To shut it off, head over to "General" in Settings, then "Background App Refresh." Tap "Background App Refresh" at the top of the page, and ensure "Off" is selected.

11. Disable Cellular Data While on Wi-FiWi-Fi is how we stay under our monthly cellular data limits. Because you don't need to use cellular data when connected to Wi-Fi, there's really no reason to force your iPhone to waste battery as it constantly searches for a cellular connection. You can quickly disable cellular data via the Control Center, and enable it just as fast when leaving Wi-Fi.More Info: How to Disable Cellular Data & Other Settings in Control Center Secondly, you can disable cellular data via the Settings app. Go to "Cellular," then ensure "Cellular Data" is disabled. Additionally, you can disable cellular data for specific apps, if you find you'd like one or two apps connected to cellular anyway.

12. Disable Wi-Fi, Bluetooth & AirDropIf you depend on Wi-Fi, wear an Apple Watch, and need to share files to a coworker via AirDrop, you'll need all three of these connections enabled on your iPhone to keep your life moving. However, if one, two, or three of these do not apply to you at any given time, it's best to disable them, as your iPhone uses battery life searching for a point of connection for each.Disabling each connection type is simple; For Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, just jump into the Settings, tap "Bluetooth" or "Wi-Fi," and disable the appropriate feature or features. AirDrop can be quickly disabled from Control Center; Swipe up from the bottom of the display, open the connectivity pane, then tap "AirDrop." When prompted, tap "Receiving Off to disconnect. Tapping either the Bluetooth or Wi-Fi icons here will not disable those items, however.More Info: What All the Bluetooth & Wi-Fi Symbols Mean in Control Center

13. Set Your Flashlight to the Lowest BrightnessIf you're like me, you probably rely on your iPhone's flashlight quite often. While it's tempting to keep the flashlight set to the brightest setting, it can be unnecessary in many situations since the lowest brightness gets the job done and saves battery.Just open Control Center and 3D Touch or long-press on the flashlight button. Select the lowest brightness setting, and iOS 12 will remember your choice the next time you turn on the flashlight.More Info: How to Change Flashlight Brightness on Your iPhone

14. Enable Wi-Fi AssistWi-Fi assist helps you avoid subtle battery drain in areas of weak Wi-Fi connection. If the Wi-Fi is too slow for a proper connection, the iPhone automatically switches to a cellular connection, speeding up your internet use but also relieving pressure on the battery. You won't be able to take advantage of this is cellular data is disabled, however, so keep that in mind when choosing your battery-saving techniques. To make sure Wi-Fi assist is enabled, open Settings, tap "Cellular," then scroll all the way to the bottom of the page to find the "Wi-Fi Assist" slider. Make sure it's on.

15. Disable WidgetsIf you take advantage of the convenience of widgets in iOS, this one might be a tough tip to hear. However, widgets can cause battery drain, especially those which use location services, such as Maps or Weather. To disable widgets, swipe right on the Today View to enter the widget window. Scroll to the bottom of the page, tap "Edit," then tap the red minus next to any Widget you'd like to remove. The good news? Restoring any of these widgets is as easy as scrolling to the bottom of this page and tapping the green plus next to the widget in question.

16. Turn on Low Power ModeWho doesn't love Low Power Mode? The feature disables a suite of features that add stress on your iPhone's battery, some of which you can't disable yourself. While iOS only prompts you to enable the setting once your iPhone's battery reaches 20 percent (and then ten percent), you can manually enable it at any time to give your battery a boost.Enabling Low Power Mode is as easy as saying "Hey, Siri — enable Low Power Mode." You can also type the request to Siri, or long-press the Home or Side button and ask the assistant that way. Alternatively, you can jump into the "Battery" section of the Settings app or use the button in the Control Center to enable "Low Power Mode" yourself.
17. Keep Your iPhone Face-DownThere are two kinds of people in this world — those that place their iPhones face down on a table and those that place them face up. If you belong to the former, you now have evidence to your method's superiority. When face down, your iPhone's display won't activate on its own when receiving notifications. You'll still hear alerts, but the display won't turn on, saving battery life without having to think about it. If you crave visual notifications, you could enable LED alerts, but the battery trade-off might not be worth it.

18. Disable 'Hey Siri'We love "Hey Siri" since the feature comes in handy for more than one tip on this list. That being said, it requires your iPhone to be on guard at all times, listening for your voice commands 24/7. That kind of surveillance doesn't come for free and will take a toll on your iPhone's daily battery life. To quickly disable "Hey Siri," go to "Siri & Search" in Settings, then disable "Listen for 'Hey Siri'."

19. Turn Off Auto-Playing Videos in AppsAuto-playing videos in apps like Facebook and Twitter can be convenient, but let's face it — if you want to watch a video, it's not a big deal to just tap the play button. In most cases, this feature is just a weight on your battery. Consider disabling the feature in apps that use it.While the setting won't be found in the same place in all apps, here are two examples to get you started:To disable auto-playing videos in Facebook, tap the hamburger menu in the bottom right, tap "Settings & Privacy" at the bottom of the list, then tap "Settings." Select "Videos and Photos" towards the bottom of the page, then tap "Autoplay." Select "Never Autoplay Videos," and you'll be all set. In Twitter, tap your profile icon, then tap "Settings and privacy." Select "Data usage," then in "Video autoplay," tap "Never."

20. Enable Reduce MotionPart of iOS' charm is in its subtle visual effects, like animations when launching apps, and the parallax effects seen on the home screen. However, all of these motions have a negative effect on your battery life. To disable them, head to "General" in Settings, tap "Accessibility," then "Reduce Motion." Enable it.

21. Enable Location Services Only for Some AppsLocation services are some of the worst culprits when it comes to battery drain. The problem? They're pretty much necessary to use a modern smartphone. Unless you don't mind total disconnection, some location services will need to remain enabled. The good news is you can be smart about which apps you give location permissions to, as well as when those apps have access to your location. In "Location Services" found in the "Privacy" menu in Settings, you'll find all the apps on your phone that request access to your location. You can blanket-disable all at the top of the display, but again, this will most likely be impractical. You're better off going through apps one by one and deciding for yourself. For each, choose from "Never," "While Using the App," or "Always" depending on how you feel you need the app you use your location.

22. Turn Off Auto-BrightnessAuto-Brightness in iOS can help make sure the iPhone display is always legible based on the ambient surroundings. If it's dark, the screen brightness will be reduced to prevent eye strain. Likewise, if it's sunny out, it'll max out so you can actually see the screen. However, if you're anywhere in between dark and bright locations, Auto-Brightness will work too hard and will provide clumsy results anyway. In truth, the setting just wastes battery life when compared to manually controlling it. Head over to "Accessibility" in the "General" settings, tap "Display Accommodations," then disable Auto-Brightness.More Info: How to Turn Your iPhone's Auto-Brightness Off

23. Turn Off 'Raise to Wake'This iOS feature is convenient, but requires extra battery life to keep your iPhone's sensors active at all times. To disable it, head over to "Display & Brightness" in Settings, then make sure the toggle next to "Raise to Wake" is turned off.More Info: How to Stop Your iPhone's Screen From Randomly Turning On

24. Disable iCloud When PossibleICloud is a great tool, especially for users with more than one iOS device. However, if your iPhone is your only iCloud-enabled tool, you might not care about connecting iCloud to certain apps and services. If that's the case, disabling iCloud for those services can save some battery, as your iPhone isn't constantly attempting to upload data to the cloud.

25. Fetch Data Less Frequently (Or Not at All)If your iPhone is set to "Fetch" email data more frequently, that's more battery drain for you. If you don't mind receiving email alerts less frequently, head to "Passwords & Accounts" in Settings, tap "Fetch New Data," then select the least frequent timeframe you can. For maximum battery-saving, choose "Manually" so you'll only receive email data when you check for it.

26. Don't Send Data to AppleSending data to Apple is helpful to the company for developing future iterations of iOS. However, all that communications unbeknownst to you can use up your battery. To give both your battery and your privacy a break, open "Privacy" in Settings, tap "Analytics," then turn off "Share iPhone Analytics." Apple Watch owners will see this setting as "Share iPhone & Watch Analytics."

27. Disable Significant LocationsPreviously called "Frequent Locations," Significant Locations records the places you visit most to provide better location services in certain apps. Disabling this setting eliminates battery-draining location recording you probably didn't even know was going on in the first place. Just head to "Locations Services" in your "Privacy" settings, tap "System Services," then "Significant Locations." Authenticate yourself, then disable the feature.

28. Disable Suggested Apps for Lock Screen & App SwitcherDo you often see an app icon in the bottom right of the lock screen or below your app windows when accessing the app switcher? Those are iOS Suggested Apps, which try to help you out by "guessing" what app would serve you best based on your location. If that doesn't concern you, and you'd rather save the battery life, head to"Location Services" in your "Privacy" settings, tap "System Services" again, then disable "Location-Based Suggestions."

29. Turn Off Most (If Not All) These Location SettingsAs you can see from the "System Services" page, there are a number of services that use your location data, draining your iPhone on a daily basis. You most likely can do without many of these settings, so turn them off. To get you started, try disabling "Emergency SOS," "Location-Based Alerts," "Location-Based Apple Ads," "Share My Location," "iPhone Analytics," "Popular Near Me," and maybe even "Improve Maps."

30. Turn on 'Limit Ad Tracking'Why not try enabling a setting for a change? "Limit Ad Tracking" blocks location-based ad trackers as much as possible, saving you battery life. Head over to "Advertising" in your "Privacy" settings, then enable "Limit Ad Tracking."

31. Turn Off Fitness TrackingFitness Tracking uses your iPhone to track your movement throughout the day. While useful, the setting uses battery you might not need. If you have a Fitbit or another fitness tracker, you won't need the additional data from your iPhone. To disable Fitness Tracking, head to "Motion & Fitness" in your "Privacy" settings, then simply deactivate "Fitness Tracking."

32. Turn Off HandoffHandoff is great when using the same app between iOS devices or Macs. If you only have an iPhone or you don't work across devices, this feature won't be of use to you, but it could still hurt your daily battery life. Turn it off from your "General" settings.

33. Disable Certain App Store SettingsIf you download an app on another iOS device, it can be useful to have that app appear on your iPhone without thinking about it. However, when you're low on battery life, that feature might do more harm than good. If you feel it's worth manually downloading your shared apps, you'll be able to save a little battery life.Go to "iTunes & App Stores" in Settings, then disable "Apps." You might want to turn off "Updates" as well, especially if you have a lot of apps on your iPhone, and "Use Cellular Data" if you decide to keep "Music" and "Books & Audiobooks" on since Wi-Fi will use less power.
34. Remove Network Extenders or Signal BoostersIf you have crappy reception at home or in your office, you may have purchased a network extender or a signal booster to get some better coverage for calls and data. Well, as much as they things can help with your cellular reception, they can really drain the battery in your iPhone. We recommended avoiding these products unless you're plugged in and charging at the same time.
35. Try a Charging Case OutIf the above tips haven't helped out much, you go the other route and look at third-party options such as battery boosters. For those of you who don't mind bulky cases, you can get an iPhone case with a built-in battery that charges your iPhone while you're out and about. When you go to charge your iPhone next, you'll also charge the battery pack case. If you don't want the extra bulk, you can just carry around small battery pack for emergency charges.Don't Miss: 9 Ways iOS 12 Makes the iPhone X Even BetterFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard
